What is Google up to in the audio hardware space? Tech site Protocol has been digging into four acquisitions of audio startups made by the tech giant in the last 15 months “spending tens of millions of dollars to acquire IP, tech and talent in the field of audio hardware”.

The four deals included spending $35m to buy parts of a partner called Synaptics, including patents covering headphones and earbuds, and buying 3D audio startup Dysonics; the IP of shuttered in-ear monitors startup RevX Technologies; and audio wearables startup Tempow, which had been making software for wireless earbuds.

The story also notes that Google is setting up an ‘experimental acoustics lab for audio technology innovations’.

With Apple pushing its earbuds, headphones and spatial audio technology hard in recent times, it seems Google is keen to keep pace.
