Last dance as nation’s nightclubs close doors

One nightclub is closing every two days in a trend that threatens to wipe out half of Britain’s remaining venues within a year, the industry has warned.

In the past nine months, 123 clubs have shut — a rate of 14 a month. The night-time economy has been hit by soaring inflation as consumers tighten their belts.

The figures suggest that if the rate of decline is not halted there will be no nightclubs left in Britain by 2030. Mike Kill, chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), said the closures could lead to a revival of illegal parties and rave culture.
