Our missions

The goal of the CNM is to guarantee the diversity, renewal, and freedom of musical creation. Its financial and non-financial support schemes aim to assist writers, composers, artists, and the professionals who work with them, enabling them to reach audiences both in France and abroad.

The Centre national de la musique is entrusted with numerous missions, many of which have an international scope.

12 goals to support the French music industry

International: foster the international development of the music sector by supporting the export of French productions, the dissemination of works, and the mobility of artists.

Europe – developing and promoting European Music Export: The CNM is a member of the European Music Exporters Exchange (EMEE), a non-profit association bringing together 34 national and regional music export offices from 29 countries. Through this initiative, the CNM aims to strengthen the European music sector by encouraging musical diversity, increasing visibility, and supporting mobility within and beyond Europe.

Heritage: promote France’s musical heritage and ensure that it remains active and accessible.

Innovation: monitor technological developments and encourage innovation within the sector.

Environment & Sustainable Development: contribute to state policy on environmental protection and sustainable development by promoting initiatives from the music sector.

Diversity: support the entire professional sector, in all its practices and components, and guarantee its diversity, and promote equal access for women and men to musical professions.

Gender Equality within the French Music Industry

As #MeToo movements have challenged cultural industries worldwide, the Ministry of Culture has tasked the CNM with helping create a safer music industry by:

  • Collecting and analysing data on female representation
  • Incentivising music companies to respect diversity
  • Implementing training programmes for professionals
  • Promoting and participating in actions to achieve gender equality

The CNM is currently working with professional committees and, in collaboration with the Ministry for Equality, developing procedures to tackle sexism, harassment, and sexual assault.

Knowledge: manage a research, forecasting, and innovation department that compiles and shares commercial and financial data across the sector, while respecting laws on personal data protection and privacy.

The CNM is also entrusted with missions that are more specific to the domestic market:

Creation: support writing, composition, performance, production, publishing, promotion, distribution, and dissemination of music and live entertainment in all their forms and for all audiences, both nationally and regionally, complementing the mechanisms directly deployed by the Ministry of Culture.

Information & Training: have an educational role, providing information, guidance, and expertise on the sector. Provide professional training services for entrepreneurs and project leaders in the sector as well as engineering training based on forward planning, innovation, and skills development.

Artistic & Cultural Education: contributes to the development of artistic and cultural education in its field of expertise, adding to the actions of the State and local authorities.

Territories: as a national public institution, the CNM supports music for all audiences at national and regional levels. It involves local authorities and their associations in the fulfilment of its missions, particularly through “sector contracts.”
